Romeo & Juliet 2025

The Greatest Love Story

Singapore Ballet opens Season 2025 with one of the greatest love stories of all time – Romeo and Juliet, choreographed by Choo-San Goh. Inspired by Shakespeare’s immortal story of love and loss, the ballet transports audience to Verona, Italy, where two hearts defy the bitter feud that divides their families. Set against a powerful score by Sergei Prokofiev, the Metropolitan Festival Orchestra will once again accompany the ballet, providing an unforgettable experience for the audience.

This will be Singapore Ballet’s fifth staging of Choo-San Goh’s Romeo and Juliet.  For Season 2025, we will feature a dynamic cast led by Kwok Min Yi and Satoru Agetsuma, alongside debutants Kana Minegishi and Kevin Zong as the titular lead characters. Choo-San’s version includes the unique character Fate, played by Elaine Heng and Esen Thang, a distinctive element of Goh’s choreography.

The production features dramatic fencing sequences, with the company training under fencing master Jeffery Lopez, a two-time SEA Games medalist. This visually stunning and emotionally resonant performance is a must-see for ballet enthusiasts and newcomers alike.

"Here's much to do with hate but more with love." – Romeo

Synopsis

The ballet opens with Romeo walking through the Square in his usual melancholic manner. As the Square comes to life with the early morning activities, a confrontation breaks out between the Capulets and the Montagues. The Prince of Verona decrees that the fighting must end. The scene moves to the Capulets’ home, where Juliet prepares for a Ball that evening.  Romeo, Mercutio and Benvolio arrive at the Ball wearing masks. At the Ball, Romeo and Juliet are brought together by Fate and fall in love. Juliet learns that Romeo is the only son of her family’s greatest enemy, the Montagues.

Later that night, Romeo steals into the Capulet orchard and visits Juliet outside her balcony. They exchange vows of love and plan to marry in secret. However, a series of unfortunate events leads to Romeo killing Juliet’s cousin Tybalt, resulting in his exile. Juliet, desperate to avoid an arranged marriage to Paris, takes a potion to fake her death. Romeo, unaware of the plan, believes she is truly dead and kills himself. When Juliet awakens and finds Romeo dead, she takes her own life. Their deaths finally reconcile their warring families, but it was too late to save the lovers.
