Soloist
Esen Thang
Singaporean dancer Esen Thang joined Singapore Ballet in 2019. She was promoted to Demi-Soloist in 2024 and to Soloist in 2026.
Esen’s repertoire with the Company spans both classical and contemporary works. Her classical roles include the principal role in Paquita and the soloist role of Fate in Romeo and Juliet, together with appearances in Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty, Don Quixote, The Nutcracker, and Balanchine’s Serenade. Her contemporary highlights include performing the Sacrificial Virgin in Rite of Spring by Kinsun Chan and her role creations in The Bistro, Terra, and Meeting Point, alongside other works by Timothy Harbour, Natalie Weir, Christina Chan, Edmund Stripe and Edward Liang. A significant aspect of her repertoire includes Goh Choo San’s celebrated works, performing the principal couple in Double Contrast as well as roles in Momentum, In The Glow Of The Night, Schubert Symphony and Fives.
Before joining the Company, Esen worked with companies in Australia and the United Kingdom, performing repertoire including Giselle, The Nutcracker, and Simon Hoy’s Archè and Guernica. She has danced principal roles in Kenneth MacMillan’s Concerto and Drew McOnie’s Be Mine, and has collaborated with Ernst Meisner, Antony Dowson, and Kerry Nicholls.
Esen began dancing at the age of five and received her early training at School of the Arts (SOTA) Singapore, continuing with Queensland Ballet, Melbourne Ballet Company, and Encore Dance Company. She was awarded the David Marshall Young Artist Scholarship, graduated with the International Baccalaureate (Career-related), and placed fifth in the senior division at the Asian Grand Prix International Ballet Competition in 2015.
