One @ The Ballet

What is One @ the Ballet?

Launched in 2009, One @ the Ballet is an exclusive, in-studio dance experience held once a month on Saturdays. Designed to break the traditional boundaries between stage and audience, this intimate event brings you closer to the dancers than ever before. Led by our esteemed Artistic Director, Janek Schergen, each session offers a rare, behind-the-scenes glimpse into the world of ballet.

From the personal rituals dancers perform before stepping on stage to the intricate creative process of choreographers, One @ the Ballet offers rich, narrative-driven insights. You’ll gain a deeper appreciation of dance through a blend of storytelling and live performances, featuring captivating excerpts from our main season productions. This unique, up-close interaction with the dancers allows audiences to not just watch but connect with the artistry of ballet in a truly personal and memorable way.

Meditation, Music & Movement

Dance and movement are inspired by sound. In the most realized of that meeting is the choreographer’s art. Music serves as our deepest response to how dance is created. Brilliant composers like Peter Ilych Tchaikovsky and Igor Stravinsky worked closely in developing whole pieces of music meant to be companions to the movement created by a choreographer. The successful union of these art forms can take an audience beyond the ordinary and create a memorable experience and transform how we can link all the senses.

Romeo & Juliet
With this special One @ the Ballet we will highlight how story telling is accomplished through the art of choreography. Romeo and Juliet is one of the most famous adaptations of literature into a ballet. The music for Romeo and Juliet was composed by Sergei Prokofiev and was thought to be less than ideal. History has proved that wrong and it has become one of the most beautiful and well known orchestral scores in memory. The choreography for our production is by Choo-San Goh and the sets and costume design by Peter Cazalet. We will show several segments of the ballet to illustrate how each of the characters propels the narrative of the ballet to its dramatic conclusion.

Singapore Ballet
Singapore Ballet was co-founded as Singapore Dance Theatre by Anthony Then and Goh Soo Khim with just seven professional dancers. In 37 years, we have grown to the point where we now have 36 dancers and six performance seasons that span though the calendar year, as well as international touring. The repertoire has included some of the most well-regarded international choreographer’s works in newly created and established pieces as well as full-length classical ballets. The company is now one of the most significant arts organizations in Singapore. The path we have travelled towards building the company will be shown with several examples of our repertoire presented in segments.

Repertory Treasures
Dance companies are always asked what is “new” in the repertoire. It becomes a matter of balance to present a mix of heritage repertoire and new works for our audiences. With an expanding repertoire, as the years progress for Singapore Ballet, certain ballets emerge as the identity of the company and new works are influenced by the style of those particular choreographic pieces. What continues and how we move forward is the alchemy that forms the unique identity and perspective of the repertoire for our audiences. We’ll show you what defines us as a dance company and where we are intending to go in future.

We will show costumes a wide range of our costumes and how it has enhanced the entire look of a work of choreography.

A Dancer’s Perspective
Every professional dancer starts their day with the ritual of taking company class, whether they are new to the company or a dancer of great experience. Their daily rehearsal schedule following can consist of a full five hour day of learning and working on either a single ballet or up to six or more different pieces. How dancers learn and retain choreography, structure their movements with music and function as a cohesive unit is a fascinating study for us to delve into this time. Individual dancers all have rituals that help them prepare and perform at their peak. All the many nuances of how a ballet gets to stage will be discussed and segments of upcoming repertoire will be presented.

The Three Pillars of Dance
Dance companies are supported with a balance of their repertoire for their audiences. In most cases this is defined by a conscious thought of how the development of the organization progresses from season to season. For Singapore Ballet, we have an established group of 19th century classical works, as well masterpieces created for other dance companies by well-known international choreographers and then brought into our repertoire to enrich it. Finally, we have ballets created especially for our dancers and audiences that show our own distinctive strengths and qualities. Examples of each of these important foundations to the repertory will be presented.

Ballet 101
The heritage and history of ballet is a story that is worth telling and how the development of modern dance morphed into contemporary dance theatre is part of this dialogue. What is it that has led classical ballet and contemporary dance to be considered one of the most respected of the international fine arts alongside literature, music and drama? We’ll show you the daily lives of dancers, from morning class, to rehearsal and into the experience of performance for them. You’ll experience greater insights and learn a great deal more than just attending a performance.

Terpsichore, the Goddess of Dance
In ancient legend, each of the fine arts had a goddess who represented them. Terpsichore was the goddess of dance and has been presented in several ideals in all forms of dance, from traditional cultural dance to the formalities of ballet. Ballet has a tradition that goes all the way back to the French count of Louis IVX, who envisioned himself as the Sun King and staged elaborate pageants and ballets to depict the higher nature of music, movement and performance. We have advanced a long way since then but the spectacle of dance performance has the same ideal in which it is to bring something to life that is both ideal and memorable.

Special sections of ballets that are presently in rehearsal will be demonstrated as part of the process. Several Singapore Ballet dancers will be interviewed for our audience’s enlightenment.
