synopsis

Celebrate the festive season with The Nutcracker, a joyful Christmas ballet that delights hearts of all ages.

With dazzling sets, vibrant costumes, and unforgettable characters, this enchanting production promises radiant merriment and magical memories – perfect for sharing with loved ones during the holidays. Choreographed and staged by Artistic Director Janek Schergen, this beloved classic is brought to life with warmth, imagination, and festive splendour. The Metropolitan Festival Orchestra will provide live accompaniment for the ballet.

Act I Scene I: The Party
Mrs. Nightingale hosts a Christmas party attended by family, friends, a rather aristocratic gentlemen Drosselmeyer, and visiting Russian ballerinas. Drosselmeyer gifts young Clara a Nutcracker, and the evening ends happily with thanks and farewells.

Act I Scene II: The Battle
Clara returns downstairs in search of her Nutcracker and falls asleep. When giant mice invade the house, Kristian and his soldiers, aided by Clara, defeat them in battle.

Act I Scene III: The Land of Snow
As a reward, Clara embarks on a magical journey to the Land of Snow, where she meets the Snow King, Snow Queen, and their snowflake subjects.

Act 2: The Kingdom of the Sugar Plum Fairy
Clara arrives in the magical Kingdom of Sweets, where the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Prince welcome her with a celebration of enchanting dances. Awakening with her Nutcracker beside her, Clara wonders if her adventure was a dream, until the fresh snow outside reassures her it was real.

The Metropolitan Festival Orchestra (MFO) is Singapore’s only fully-independent professional symphony orchestra. With its roots in the acclaimed Singapore Festival Orchestra (SFO), resident orchestra of the Singapore Arts Festival from 2007 to 2012, the MFO was founded in 2013 as the spiritual successor of the SFO.

The MFO is inspired by its philosophy that the orchestra is a powerful tool for bringing people together through the experience of music, and is constantly breaking new grounds through its forward-looking programmes. Bringing together some of the best professionally-trained musicians in Singapore and the region, the MFO is known for its spirited camaraderie, technical brilliance and musical versatility.
