Valerie was born in Singapore and first started ballet under her mother, Jenny Chien. From mid 2011 to 2013, she studied at the School of the Arts Singapore. In 2013 she received the National Arts Council Undergraduate Scholarship, and trained at the Central School of Ballet in London 2014-2016, where she had the opportunity to work with Crystal Pite for the premiere of Polaris and Ballet Black for the graduation tour.

Valerie joined Singapore Dance Theatre as a trainee in January 2017, became an apprentice in January 2018, and was promoted to Artist in January 2019. She has
since performed in company productions of Romeo and Juliet (2020), Peter and Blue series, Coppélia, The Nutcracker, Giselle, Don Quixote, the annual Moon and Stars 2019 gala, Singapore Ballet Academy’s 60th anniversary 2018 gala, in Swan Lake where she got to dance the role of Spanish Divertissment.

She has also danced in Linea Adora by Timothy Harbour, SYNC by Nils Christe, George Balanchine’s Serenade and Theme and Variations, Toru Shimazaki’s Unexpected B, Lucas Jervies’ 2019 premiere of Family Reunion. She also got to dance in zer0 by Rachel Lum, The Third Reset by Christina Chan, and was featured in Vogue New Beginnings.
